About Liliya Soapworks
Liliya Soapworks was begun in early 2009 as a natural way to keep my daughter squeaky clean. Her skin was dry and itchy after washing with commercial detergent bars, so I researched a better way.
My background in chemistry came in handy! I started making soap the old-fashioned way, with oils, lye and water. When they combine, a reaction occurs to make soap and glycerin. I actually add more oil than necessary to increase the moisture of the soaps.
About Cold-Processed Soap
The Process
I use the cold-process method to make my soap. I take the following ingredients:
- olive oil
- canola oil
- coconut oil
- water
- sodium hydroxide (lye)
and combine them at a specific temperature. After stirring for a long time, I can add colours and scents. The soap reaction is complete after about 24 hours. After that, there is no more lye in the mold, just soap and glycerin!
Curing
My soaps are hand cut and left to cure for at least a month. The longer they cure, the milder and longer lasting they become. They can be stored for up to a year.
